Motivation – What is it?

September 14th, 2006

Ok – so it’s been a while since I last made a post. I was full of enthusiasm and energy and committed to keeping up daily entries. I was full of ideas and bursting to share all that I have recently become aware of.

SO WHAT HAPPENED?

Well, I have many excuses;

  • It was raining so I didn’t go for a run with the dog.
  • I didn’t visit the Tree of Infinite Possibilities.
  • I was working.
  • I had family commitments.
  • And on it goes…

So what is Motivation? How did we get it? Why did we lose it? Where did it go? Did we really ever have it?

Today I want to explore what motivation is from my perspective.

Motivation comes after that spark of inspiration when a new idea ‘appears’ in the mind. Maybe it’s brand new and no one thought of it before (or that is how it is perceived by the person that receives it). The thought changes to excitement. Emotions start to flow and adrenalin gets the body moving and action usually follows.

Ideas flood the mind and this is probably a great time to start writing things down. Many of these thoughts disappear and are forgotten as fast as they appear. Here is a little trick I have come to use when those thoughts are gone but you know that there were some great ideas and you want to access them again.

Retrieving Your Lost Ideas

As you lay in bed, just before sleep, when you are between the waking world and the unconscious landscape of sleep, listen and watch your mind. Don’t force it, just let the thoughts flow. You may remember dreams at this point and those ‘lost’ thoughts and ideas may pop into your mind once again.

Don’t lose it again – write it down.

Write it ALL down. You may use it – you may not – you may unearth is again ten years later. But it comes from a place of creation so honour it as it deserves.

The above technique can be used just as you wake in the morning and for specific mediation design to connect with the unconscious mind and that spark of the divine within us all.

The reason it works is to do with brain waves and different states of consciousness. These can be purposely developed or the natural state (for example just before sleep) can be utilised. More on this later…

Thoughts on Inspiration

Ideas come to many people at the same time but not everyone acts on them. Ever had an idea that you think is unique and brilliant and would make a lot of money and generate a great deal of interest? Did you just let that though flow from your mind and not act on it only to find that a year or two later that very same idea is a global success? Someone else also received the same idea from the universe. The difference is that they acted on it. They followed their inspiration and saw the big picture.

I have done this many times only to kick myself (figuratively of course) later. Admittedly not all the inspiration created global success, but it was evident that something bigger was happening here. It’s as though a great idea was sent to all those who were open to it. Maybe many more people received the same inspired thought through dreams but did not consciously remember in their waking state. Possibly it was part of the collective unconscious (more on this in a later post).

Of course there are other forms of motivation such as earning more money by working harder. I guess this is the motivation I ‘lost’ whilst it was raining. Not exactly divine inspiration at work but the motivation was there, something caused me to postpone that activity and now I am having trouble getting motivated again!

Anyone want to get me moving again? Post your comments and I’ll let you know if it works – I promise. My dog will thank you.

I’ll explore lost motivation another time. Any thoughts? I am open to (and encourage) discussion.
